The Detroit News short editorials on April 28, 2007 included the following comment. It is not aimed at Okemos, but does address the mindset of the public school establishment in general:
State fails to tackle public school wasteWhile Gov. Jennifer Granholm continues to complain about cutting state school aid near the end of the current budget year, she hasn't said anything about waste in school spending. The Flint school board president is under fire for racking up a $3,055 cell phone bill this year in a cash-strapped district -- including in one month averaging 5.5 hours of phone use a day. Many districts just sent school board members to San Francisco for an expensive national school board conference. Other districts pay their local teacher union presidents NOT to teach. The state and local districts haven't come close to cutting public education "to the bone."
