Thank you for the card you sent us this week. I was pretty close to vote yes this time on the bond because all you hear is that our kids have to have this technolgy to be "successful" in life.
It was good to learn about this website and to read all the comments. I just hope this card did not come too late for people to see both sides of the facts.
All you heard was that if we don't vote "yes" our property value will go down hill. Well, they are already going down. We have been trying to sell our house last year with no luck and are trying again this year. My husband's job is out of state and we need to move, even we like it here in Okemos. I'm afraid that with taxes going up again it will be harder to sell a house as well. (We are paying close to $ 7000 a year and our tax will go up $ 190/year if bond gets voted in. (taxable value:ca.159,900, which is higher than last year). Of course you can say that this would only be 52 cents a day. The problem is everything else is going up too, like cable, phone, gas, insurance, water, electricity etc. Now, if your salary keeps going up too then you are ok. But in today's world it often takes two salaries to even make it and people work harder and more just to have all the material things and gadgets that we believe, will make us happier and smarter. I am not against technology at all, we have several computers, tvs, videogames at our house and my husband and sons are all using computers at work and school but a lot of that they taught to themselves. They did not learn it in school. And as we all know computers can also be used to hurt people by getting in their system and stealing money and identity. We had an experience with one of our sons at the High School where a student took his password and sent a "dirty" picture to a teacher and got him into trouble. He was not careful enough and must have left his account open. That's the downside of technology, I guess. There will always be people who are abusing the system and try to do harm to others.
